Hospitals must adhere to best
standards: Paswan
Hospitals and doctors need
to maintain best standards while delivering healthcare services, minister for
consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan said on
Thursday. Paswan was addressing a gathering of leading healthcare providers from
public and private sectors at TOI's 'Heathcare Achievers Awards 2014'.
Elaborating on the role of
healthcare providers, Paswan said, "People go to hospitals with a lot of
hope when they are in despair and therefore, hospitals must ensure that they
fulfil their responsibilities and maintain best quality and standards in all services
and products."
There were a total of 25
awards given to different hospitals and healthcare providers from across the
country. The awards, presented by New India Assurance, were divided into
different categories such as those for best single speciality, multispeciality,
secondary care etc. in different zones. Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute &
Research Centre, Delhi, bagged the award for best single speciality hospital
(oncology), while Apollo Hospitals received it for best multispeciality hospital
in Chennai.
Health secretary Lov Verma
said the day was apt to give away the awards as it coincided with Time magazine
naming Ebola fighters, including doctors, paramedics and other medics, as its
"Person of the Year 2014" .The haemorrhagic fever mushroomed from an
outbreak into an epidemic in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, and there have
been scattered cases in Nigeria, Mali, Spain, Germany and the United States.
Verma also congratulated
those who have worked to eradicate polio from India, which accounted for 50% of
world's total polio population till 2009.
Actor Bipasha Basu, who
also attended the ceremony as the goodwill ambassador for good health,
emphasized the need for spiritual healing along with an exercise regimen for
staying healthy.
