Cancer survivor Yuvraj Singh bats for awareness

India cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s cancer foundation ‘YouWeCan’ today joined hands with an NGO Navbharat Sewa Samiti to roll out a campaign named ‘Cancer Mukt Purvi Dilli’ focussing on awareness, education and early detection of the disease. At the launch of the programme, Yuvraj highlighted the need for an early detection of the dangerous disease to save more lives.
‘People are scared of meeting patients suffering from cancer. They think they should not touch or eat with the cancer patients. People need to be educated about these misconceptions. There is a stigma attached to it. Many lives can be saved if people have the right knowledge about the disease and are diagnosed at an early stage,’ said Yuvraj. ’Our foundation’s focus is to facilitate more and more detections at early stages, so that lives can be saved. This disease can happen to anyone. The patient and his family need to be strong to successfully tackle cancer,’ he added.
As soon as Yuvraj arrived for the function, an over enthusiastic crowd converged around the stage to catch a glimpse of the out-of-favour batsman. He was welcome with a dance performance by a troop from Shaimak Davar’s institute. The 32-year-old couldn’t resist himself from shaking a leg on the medley comprising Bollywood tracks.
What exactly did Yuvraj Singh suffer from?
The cricket star known for his flamboyance and his legendary six sixes on the pitch was diagnosed with a malignant tumor between his lung and heart known as a seminoma.
Seminoma: what does it mean?
This tumour is usually found in the reproductive organs of menThe incidence of this tumour outside the testicles is extremely rare and forms less than 1 per cent of cancers on the whole. It is a germ cell tumour of the testis or, more rarely, the mediastinum or other extra-gonadal regions. It has the distinction of being one of the most treatable and curable cancers, with a survival rate of about 95%. Usually malignant in nature it originates from the germinal epithelium of the seminiferrous tubules (the tubes that connect the testis to the penis). Treatment usually requires removal of one testis, but this does not affect fertility or other sexual functioning.
In Yuvraj’s case, it was located in the superior mediastinal region (the upper area between his lungs, just above the heart). Dr Anupama Hooda, director of the oncology department at MAX hospital, Delhi, said that in Yuvraj’s case there was a 95 per cent chance of cure with therapy, and the chances of recurrence were almost nil.
