The healthcare sector in India which witnessed an initial wave of private investments in tertiary multi specialty hospitals, over the last decade, has witnessed spurring investments in single specialty chains. Some major names in single specialty hospitals in the country include: Fortis Escorts Heart and Research Centre (New Delhi), Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital (Mumbai), Sankara Nethralaya (Chennai), Vasan Eye Care (Chennai), HOSMAT Hospital (Bengaluru) among others.

Provectus to sponsor AAPI of Indian origin, plans to participate in conferences in Mumbai

Provectus to sponsor AAPI of Indian origin, plans to participate in conferences in Mumbai
Provectus Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., a development-stage oncology and dermatology biopharmaceutical company (Provectus), has agreed to sponsor the activities of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI). In addition, Provectus will participate at AAPI's 2015 Global Healthcare Summit in Mumbai, India, running from January 2-4, 2015, as well as at the Annual AAPI Conference in Orlando, Florida, running from June 17-21, 2015.
Peter Culpepper, COO and CFO of Provectus, said, “We are very pleased to be sponsoring AAPI in the coming year, and we believe the relationship will benefit both AAPI and our shareholders. One of the benefits to Provectus will be engaging the Indian market through trusted physicians for PV-10, our novel investigational cancer treatment. We expect this will not only assist us in gaining regulatory approval in India but also will support our patient recruitment efforts as we embark on our phase 3 clinical trial of PV-10 for the treatment of melanoma.”
He continued, “AAPI is the umbrella organization representing the interests of over 60,000 doctors of Indian origin in the USA, and there are over 25,000 medical residents and fellows currently in USA. This gives us tremendous reach in America as well as on the subcontinent. One in every seven American patients is seen by an Indian doctor, and this ratio is even higher in the smaller towns and underserved areas due to the larger proportion of Indian doctors in more remote locations. As a result, the Indian doctor also serves the most diverse group of patients in the USA including Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanics and other groups, which is important for clinical research and trials.”
Culpepper concluded, “We will hit the ground running with AAPI by attending their Global Healthcare Summit (GHS) in Mumbai, India, starting January 2, 2015. At this GHS, we expect around 800 delegates to attend. Between 150 and 200 will be from the USA, and some from the United Kingdom, Canada, Middle East and Australia. In addition, AAPI will have a live extension to its members in the USA who are unable to attend, as well a live telecast to an estimated 50,000 doctors around India. We will inform this huge group of doctors from around the globe about the progress we have made with  PV-10 to date, what we are planning in the anticipated phase 3 clinical trial, and what we have learned about PV-10 for indications other than melanoma.”
Dr Ravi Jahagirdar, MD, president of AAPI, said, “We are very happy to have Provectus as an official sponsor of AAPI and to enjoy their participation at our coming meetings in Mumbai and Orlando in 2015. The Indian diaspora offers a unique, global network of physicians who can increase the communication of medical developments like the clinical results shown thus far for PV-10. Moreover, we have close professional, educational and family ties to India itself, a nation of 1 billion. We believe this introduction of Provectus to the healthcare industry in India will be well received, since PV-10 has many features that make it well suited for local conditions.”
Provectus has also expanded the membership of its Strategic Advisory Board with the addition of  Deanna Angello, director, Commercial Strategy and New Business Planning for the Global Established Pharma business at Pfizer Inc. In this role, she is focused on new business opportunities for the US region, notably in areas such as licensing of new assets, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic partnerships. She was promoted to this position from her role as Senior Manager, Marketing, Lyrica, a product approved for fibomyalgia, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and other pain-related conditions.
Dr Craig Dees, Ph.D., CEO of Provectus, said, “We are delighted to have Deanna join our Strategic Advisory Board. She is a highly experienced, forward-thinking healthcare and pharmaceutical strategist, with commercial experience in marketing and business development  and we look forward to working with her in the coming months.”
Angello stated, “I am very pleased to be joining the Provectus Strategic Advisory Board just as they are beginning their phase 3 clinical trial of Intralesional PV-10 for the treatment of melanoma. It is a very exciting time for the Company both scientifically and commercially, and I look forward to contributing to its success.”
Provectus Biopharmaceuticals, Inc., specializes in developing oncology and dermatology therapies. PV-10, its novel investigational drug for cancer, is designed for injection into solid tumors (intralesional administration), thereby reducing potential for systemic side effects.

While doctors with DM (Medical Oncology), M.Ch (Surgical Oncology) and MD (Radiation Oncology) treat cancer patients in higher level tertiary care hospitals, Cancer is also being treated in hospitals by other doctors such as general surgeons, gynecologists, ENT surgeons etc., depending on the type and site of cancer. In fact, cancer is being diagnosed and treated at various levels in the government health care system. The government of India had assisted 27 regional cancer centres which have oncology wards.
The Central government has recently approved a scheme for enhancing the tertiary care cancer facilities in the country. Under this scheme, the Centre will assist 20 state cancer institutes (SCIs) and 50 tertiary care cancer centres (TCCCs) in different parts of the country.
The Central government is supplementing the efforts of the state governments for providing healthcare facilities including for cancer. The treatment in government hospitals is either free or subsidized. Financial assistance to below poverty line (BPL) patients is provided under the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi (RAN). The Health Minister’s Cancer Patient Fund within RAN has been set up in 2009 wherein 27 erstwhile regional cancer centres (RCCs) are provided with revolving funds to provide immediate financial assistance upto Rs 1 lakh to BPL cancer patients.

Torrent partners with Reliance Life to sell biosimilars in India

Torrent partners with Reliance Life to sell biosimilars in India
Ahmedabad-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd today announced that the company has entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Reliance Life Sciences for marketing three biosimilars in the Indian market.
In an announcement made on Thursday, Torrent Pharmaceuticals informed that Rituximab, Adalimumab and Cetuximab will be developed by Reliance Life Sciences and supplied to Torrent Pharma after obtaining all necessary regulatory approvals. Torrent Pharma will be the only company to market these biosimilars in India other than Reliance Life Sciences, a company statement said here.
As per the terms of agreement, Reliance Life Sciences will manufacture these products at its facility in Navi Mumbai and supply to Torrent Pharma for a period of ten years.
Rituximab and Cetuximab cater to the oncology segment and are used in the treatment of various cancers like leukemia, lymphoma, colorectal, head and neck cancers. Adalimumab is the most preferred therapy for the treatment of auto immune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and IBD.
"Torrent Pharma forayed into the oncology and dermatology segments in 2011-12 with the launch of exclusive divisions and has since gained a strong position in these segments. The licensing agreement with Reliance Life Sciences is expected to significantly boost its presence in these segments in the coming years," it said.

Myriad Genetics' Ovarian Cancer Test Wins FDA Approval

Myriad Genetics' Ovarian Cancer Test Wins FDA Approval
Utah-based molecular diagnostics provider Myriad Genetics, Inc. has received the FDA approval for its well acclaimed molecular companion diagnostic test – BracAnalysis CDx.
Myriad Genetics' BracAnalysis CDx has become the first and only FDA-approved test to be permitted for use with AstraZeneca's  latest FDA-cleared ovarian cancer drug – LynParza – for the treatment of women with advanced ovarian cancer.
Myriad's BracAnalysis CDx is a highly accurate molecular companion diagnostic test that can detect the presence of BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations by examining a patient's blood sample. Evidently, through clinical studies, it has been observed that BracAnalysis CDx can effectively recognize patients with BRCA mutations, who can then be treated with Lynparza.
Women with mutations resulting in defective BRCA genes are more likely to contract ovarian cancer. It is estimated that 10–15% of all ovarian cancer cases is associated with hereditary BRCA mutations.
Management at Myriad believes this FDA approval will open up new roads for personalized treatment of ovarian cancer patients who can potentially be treated with a new class of drugs like Lynparza.
At the European Society of Medical Oncology meeting, data presented by Myriad showed that its tumor BracAnalysis CDx can identify approximately 44% more ovarian cancer patients who are likely to respond to olaparib than conventional germline BRAC testing. This has significantly enhanced the potential market for olaparib and the significance of the BracAnalysis CDx test.
However, less than 25% of ovarian cancer patients know their germline BRCA status, the knowledge of which is crucial for treatment with Lynparza. This implies that Myriad's BracAnalysis test has significant untapped opportunity to capitalize on, going ahead.
Currently, Myriad is engaged in active partnership with several biopharmaceutical companies to further evaluate BRACAnalysis CDx as an investigational companion diagnostic for use with other PARP inhibitors and chemotherapeutic agents and for use in many other solid tumor types.
Myriad expects to get a revenue benefit in the second half of fiscal 2015 from BracAnalysis CDx, once Lynparza gets the FDA nod. We believe the aforementioned FDA go-ahead serves as a stepping-stone for the same.
